Offline-first apps are quietly winning in places with patchy networks

Products built to work without a connection are outperforming faster rivals that assume one.

The design principle is old and unfashionable: assume the network is not there, and reconcile later.

Where it shows

Retention figures diverge sharply outside metropolitan areas. Apps that queue actions locally and sync when they can hold users that always-online rivals lose at the first dropped connection.

The trade-off is complexity — conflict resolution is genuinely hard — which is why the approach stayed rare.
